My dog won’t run off

I see them all the time.

I walk by the house and the dog is out front, off leash.

I walk by a park where it is open on each side to traffic and I see a dog, well, more than one, off leash.

Crossing the street at a busy intersection, he had his dog by his side, off leash.

The dog that I walked by, in front of its house, lurched out at me. His owner was right there so she was able to call him off. She then proceeded to say, "he doesn’t usually do that, it must be because your dog is on a leash".

The dog in the park rushed out when he saw us. He was friendly, yet he put himself in danger as he crossed a busy street to get to us. When the owner caught him he said, "my dog does not usually do that, it must be because your dog is on a leash."

The dog crossing the street beside his owner, off leach, walked by another dog crossing with his owner, going the other way, on leash. The dog barked and lurched toward the other dog. The man walking him with no leash gave a command and the dog retreated in time. I heard the man say- "my dog does not usually do that, it must be because your dog is on leash."

Something of a thread here you see!!.

I know that it is possible that all three of these people, and in many other cases, have full control of their dog. Yet in just as many cases, they do not. A command to come is ignored by many a dog in pursuit of another.

The owners -as you can see by the thread- all want to blame the person who is walking with their dog, on a leash. ( the dog of course)

Seriously, what are they thinking?

Should all dogs be trained to walk beside their owner off leash, in all situations?  While it would be lovely to think that a dog could have that much freedom, and the owner could have that much control, and that with it all would be safe,  it simply is no so and never will be.

Please have consideration for others and keep your dog on a leash when others are. There are plenty of off leash areas you can take your dog.

O, I know, I don’t mean you. Most people do keep their dogs on leash when they should.

But I can hear someone saying now." But my dog won’t run out."

Even though we do keep our dogs on leash, they still need to be under our control and sometime for that we need some help.

There are many good trainers available and here are only just a few.

If you know a trainer you would like to recommend, sign up, and post it to the site.
